Eastbury Tennis

A message from the Tennis Secretary concerning Eastbury Tennis

It is with great sadness we have to tell you that Eastbury Residents’ Association have not been able to reach an agreement with Three River District Council for an appropriate rent and cost of maintenance for the four Tennis Courts at Batchworth Lane. Our tenancy agreement with TRDC has therefore been terminated.
Without going into details at this time, the essential facts are that TRDC new Lease proposals for Rent, Maintenance and other Charges have effectively quadrupled the cost to ERA. It was judged that residents were unlikely to pay over £100 per household for the court-only facilities provided. ERA could have subsidised the cost to residents for a limited period from reserves but the level required was unacceptable and it was generally felt inequitable to use ERA funds to favour the 10% of ERA households (120) who are members of Eastbury Tennis.
This was not a decision taken lightly as the Committee fully appreciates that the Tennis Courts, Recreation Field and Play Area are very much the heart and epi-centre of the Eastbury Area and that increased involvement in sports activities is much to be encouraged. However, TRDC’s payment requirements were just a step too far. You can see from the TRDC letter of 28th March 2017 (click here to view) that our attempts to negotiate a lower rent were rejected and the rental termination has been confirmed even at this late hour.
Personally, after nearly 15 years’ involvement with Eastbury Tennis and the immense effort over the last few years to get the Courts resurfaced and refurbished, this is a great regret.
We will be in touch later with details regarding the return of your key deposits.
