BCC Love your High Street

In 2022 the Rickmansworth Market returned, and it was a great success with a fantastic array of stalls focussed on sustainability. We are grateful to the residents that supported the market, and we know they looked forward to a monthly trip to Rickmansworth High Street. After a short winter break, the market is opening again and as before it will be held on the last Sunday of each month, starting with Sunday 26th March from 10.30 AM to 2.30 PM. We have a wide variety of stalls, many of which sell out most months with over 35 to kick us off this month. The quality keeps on increasing & we have a waiting list of parties wishing to participate..

The first market of 2023 is fast approaching and in additional to coming to what is your magical market please bring your families & friends and try out some of the stunning goods and food on offer by the community of local, sustainable, ethical traders. The “Food Stalls” will be offering a range of flavours including Venison Burgers, a taste of Caribbean, and both Sri Lankan & Indian dishes. Please don’t forget to pop in and support our local shops too and have some fun with your neighbours at the Rickmansworth #loveyourhighstreet Market.

So you want to organise a Street Party?

The ERA has some steps & tips gathered from some Street Party Experts

Organise a committee at your first meeting
- Gauge interest in your street, preferably by knocking or posting flyers in doors.
- Remember to tell neighbours on what day you have picked and from what times the street will be closed (daylight hours only).
- If there is a potential cost mention the amount (as best as you know and mention where the extra funds would go e.g. ice cream for children, champagne for a toast etc.). This sum should be collected in cash due to difficulties setting up event specific bank accounts.
- Figure out the main tasks and asks you want for volunteers e.g.
  - Security
  - Catering
  - Decorating
  - Music
  - Street Games
  - Council Management
  - Insurance (not always necessary but do check)
Once you have started things off contact the council. This procedure is usually quite easy, you need to fill out this form from Hertfordshire County Council. Note: If you road is a main arterial connection (A roads/Bus routes) there may be charges, try to find a smaller segment to close off which won't cause too much disruption (e.g. emergency vehicles)
Send a follow up letter/knock on doors to ask for volunteers, and check on additional items e.g. entertainment, music, games

Notes:

It should be alcohol free as this will incur further paperwork as you need to contact your local authority (Three Rivers) for a licence
We recommend keeping it a private extremely local affair without any stalls/sales, as that could complicate the event
Order trestle tables and benches if you want to have everyone seated together (this may incur a cost and we recommend seeking local traders), leaving room for street games e.g. football. Alternatively have tables outside each house and wander up and down meeting neighbours further afield.
It is a local affair, so you are not allowed to advertise to the wider public as this could breach your agreement with HCC, but of course feel free to invite friends in moderation.
The sooner you submit your application the better (there is a deadline of 6 weeks) as you may be rejected if many streets nearby choose to have a street party, note that you can only have one per street a year.
